Follow the mighty Clutha / Mata-Au river on an action-packed 3 day adventure riding 3 of New Zealand's most spectacular cycle trails - the Lake Dunstan Trail, Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold. These trails offer amazing riding through fantastic scenery with together with glimpses of Central Otago's gold mining origins. You’ll follow in the footsteps of the early pioneers and take a jet boat through the central canyon of New Zealand's biggest river by volume.   • All meals are high quality made with fresh local produce. Lunches include either cafés or our famous make-your-own picnics.
  • Our expert local tour leaders provide insight and background on the areas you visit and show you how to use your bicycle and equipment.
  • Full vehicle support – in case you ever want to take a break from riding or skip a section.
  • Unlimited snacks – fresh fruit, nuts, muesli bars, sweets and chocolates!

Clutha Canyon Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Pick-up from your accommodation in Queenstown. After a drive through the Kawerau Gorge, we start with a lovely ride around the edge of Lake Dunstan, stopping in at the historic precinct of Cromwell. Then enjoy the spectacular cantilevered bridges of the newly opened Cromwell Gorge section to the Clyde Dam. Enjoy a fabulous meal at a top restaurant and stay at the best accommodation in town.
  • Day 2 – Follow the amazing Clutha Gold cycle trail,  stopping for a picnic (and possibly a swim) along the way. This spectacular trail follows the aqua blue water of New Zealand’s biggest river by volume through the Beaumont Gorge. A fabulous ride through fantastic South Island scenery. There may be time for a walk up to a scenic lookout overlooking the Roxburgh dam before dinner.
  • Day 3 – The Roxburgh Gorge is a major highlight – among the best cycle trails you’ll find anywhere in the world. From high above the dam, the cycle trail skirts the top of the walls before plunging deep into the gorge. Take a jet boat ride through the central canyon then get back on your bike to finish with a lovely flowing ride beside the river. After a final late lunch together, we deliver you back to Queenstown in the late afternoon.

* Please note we may alter the itinerary to give you the best possible experience for the safety and enjoyment of the group.

  • Choose between a high performance e-bike or a mountain bike or at no extra cost. Both are excellent but the e-bike is much easier!
  • Pick-up/drop-off from alternate locations can be arranged upon request.
  • Private bike tours can be arranged for groups of 6-10 people. Price is be subject to availability of accommodation and number of people booking. Please let us know your dates and requirements.
